Guide for consumers

1. How is my user account in Business Mail (BM) created?

You account is created when the first e-letter with your e-mail address is received by BM from an organization. The initial account has a blank password. Nobody can login to this account.

A notification will be sent to your e-mail address. You can click on this notification to update your password and your profile. This will activate your account.

After the account is activated, you can login with the email address and password to view the e-letters.

2. What is an e-letter?

An e-letter is a soft copy of a letter. It is a formal letter that carries the letter head of the sending organization and looks like the hard copy of the letter that is sent by post to you in the past. The e-letter is usually kept as a PDF document.

3. How do I know if there are e-letters that are kept in my account?

BM will send a daily notification to your e-mail address to tell you about e-letters in your account that have not been read.  You can click on a link in the notification to go to the login page in BM. You have to provide your e-mail address and password to login to the account and view your e-letters.

4. Can I download the e-letters to my personal computer?

Yes. You can download the e-letters into your personal computer or print a hard copy of these e-letters. You can also delete the e-letters from BM.

5. How long can I keep my e-letters?

You are allowed to store the e-letters in BM for up to 24 months. This allows you to refer to the past e-letters. You can search for the e-letters by the sending organization, date or by a keyword in the description.

You will find it useful to keep your monthly statements for up to 24 months and to refer to past month's statements.

6. How secure are my e-letters?

The e-letters are encrypted in the database. Nobody can read them, except you (and you have to provide your e-mail address and password to login to the account). You can set mark some e-letters as "confidential". A second password has to be provided to read these e-letters.

Some organizations will keep their e-letters in their database. In this case, BM will not have access to these e-letters. The organization will only provide a link to BM to read these e-letters.

7. Can I unsubscribe from BM?

You can unsubscribe from BM at any time. When you unsubscribe, we will notify the sending organization to send the e-letters directly to your e-mail account.

You will find it an advantage to use BM, rather than receive the e-letters sent to your e-mail address. Some e-letters are not delivered to the e-mail account due to spam control or other restrictions set by e-mail servers. These restrictions do not apply to BM.

8. What is the charge to use BM?

There is no charge to the consumer to use BM.

9. Who are the organizations that are now using BM?

Initially, BM will only by used by Tan Kin Lian & Associates. We aim to attract more organizations to use BM after it has been proved to be convenient and secure. Our targets are the big organizations, such as banks, credit card companies, telephone companies, utilities companies and other big senders of hard copy mail.
